Hi John,
I was in your shoes a bit over a year ago. I own an Omni V that I dearly
love. I was considering selling it and purchasing an Omni VI+. I
researched quite a bit and came to the conclusion that there was very little
to be gained in going to the VI+ for me. The receiver sections are almost
identical but for the VI+'s DSP which does work pretty well..... but I have
never needed DSP to work any station I wanted to anyway. I "did" have one
of the fancy Timewave DSP boxes ... for 2 days.... didn't like it and sold
it, hated it.... didn't sound good and no discernable improvement to the
Omni V.
The crowning statement was a discussion on the merit of upgrading with one
of the guys at Ten-Tec. They too actually recommended keeping the Omni
V..... what I would have gained sure wouldn't have been worth the nearly
$1500 extra cash besides the procedes of selling the V.
What I chose to do was to upgrade my Omni V using Carl Moreschi's
modifications to make ot a Omni V.9. I did this last summer and have never
looked back..... makes an already great rig even better. And only cost me
about $15 to do...... the mods add what everyone really wants the Omni V to
be.... band stacking registers, spotting tone, a method to zero beat the
freq display, direct freq entry and a change to the rs232 system that makes
it equal to the Omni VI+.
As for me I'm keeping my Omni V. Not as many bells and whistles but for me
it IS the answer to my needs...... YMMV.....
