I spoke with the owner of the resort today, and wanted to pass on some
information to you.
1. If you will want a motel room, better reserve it asap. Spring Break is
in effect for some areas. The telephone number is 254-775-4444. I was
talking with Brent when I called. They have RV sites too, but I recommend
you get a reservation for that.
Many people just sleep in their vehicle, if at all. Most just fish the
whole time. I've personally reserved a motel room.
2. We have free use of the Pavilion there for any outdoor amateur radio
stuff we do. I plan to take my Arrow Antenna outfit and do some Satellite
contacts, and a brief introduction to Satellite Operations for Hams. Anyone
else willing to do a demonstration?
3. Cost of just fishing is $3.50 per person per 12 hours in the crappie
house. For those unaware, it's an indoor fishing dock floating on the
water. It's heated and has a convenience store in it and mini-restaurant.
However, if you have a small personal propane heater, you are invited to
bring it, as the heating may not be sufficient if it gets really cold
outside. Bring longjohns just in case.
4. Get your fishing license this week before you go. They are sometimes
checked out by the game wardens there. They checked when I have been there
in the past.
5. The owner says this is the right time to go, the best crappie fishing is
just starting. He says live bait is effective, and mentioned that jigging
is working too, especially with a jig head, and a formerly-live minnows
body. Only two poles max per person in the crappie house. The crappie
house is divided into smoking and nonsmoking sections.
6. The best way to keep any fish you intend to keep, is in the basket
designed to retain them alive. That way they are fresh when you clean them.
Anyone want to demo to the newbies how to clean or filet a fish?
7. Put your name on your stuff. I saw an altercation once over a basket of
fish there.
8. Get a clip for your car keys; it really sucks to lose them in the water.
Guess how I know that?
9. The resort has a website at http://www.lakesidevillage.net, but the
email address on that site does NOT work yet. They are not all set up for
computer transactions yet.
10. KB5YLG/KB5YLF plan to depart the Azle area late afternoon on Friday.
I'll post repeater and radio frequencies by Thursday night.
