Hey everyone,

This Saturday, April 8th, the Tech Amateur Radio Association will be
operating for the NM QSO party from a point near the summit of South Baldy
(In the Magdalena Mountain Range just to the West of Socorro here). If you
want to get some experience making contacts on the lower frequency bands,
this event is for you. No radio license required.

What is a QSO Party????

Stations all over NM and the nation will be trying to contact as many
counties in NM as possible. We will be operating for this contest, trying
to gain as many points by contacting many states and counties around. This
will be a great opportunity to explore the lower frequency bands with 80
through 20 meter wavelength and enjoy non-line of sight ionospheric
propagation to stations all around the world.

Where will we be operating??

We will officially be operating from a point near the gate to the Madgalena
Ridge observatory. The dirt road up is a little tricky for smaller vehicles
(although they have maintained it somewhat), if you need a ride, please
mention below. Directions, follow this link. Just stop when you see the
cars. If you have hit the gate, you have gone too far, and need to go back
1/4 mile.

When will we be operating???
Saturday, April 1st. Event officially starts at 8:00AM.  I will be there
until mid afternoon probably. If you want to help setup, I will be leaving
Tech at 6:30AM.


WEATHER
The weather looks good, no precipitation, but it is cloudy, and possibly
windy towards the later afternoon up to 18 mph. The high on site will be
60?, at 8AM, temp at 40?. Please dress accordingly, and stay hydrated.

RF INTERFERENCE INFO
I have talked with Professor Eack, and the Spectrum Management for the VLA,
and from the location just shy of South Baldy, all frequency bands are
usable within reasonable power limits. If you want to hike up to the very
peak of south Baldy, please restrict all transmissions to 30MHz and below
as request from spectrum management.

If you think of it, please take one or two good pictures of your operation
so we can add it to NMQP?s photo album (http://www.newmexicoqsoparty.

In the past, a number of NMQP mobile rover stations have tried to gather on
around 7.260 MHz (LSB) at the bottom (half hour) of each hour to make QSOs
from whichever county they may be at the moment.  Give a listen for their
CQs and jump in for some good county multipliers.

Hello everyone, our club has an opportunity to visit the VLA and tour the
inner facilities with thanks to Dan Mertely, the Frequency Spectrum
management person there:

"I could provide an "insider's tour" of our facilities,
including (perhaps) an antenna climb & description of our 8 cryogenic,
uW receivers, feeds, and antenna optics."

The tour will occur Friday, April 28th at 3:30 PM. We will meet in the
Swimming pool parking lot at 2:30 PM. If you want to carpool, I have room
for 4 people.

Subject: [TARA] Meeting tonight and workman repeater update

Yesterday, I took the workman repeater off-air from the penthouse. The
machine was having trouble with "crackling" on the transmitter, which
needed to be fixed. The entire unit is going to be mounted in a secure
cabinet, and we need to upgrade some features.

Tonights meeting will consist of working on the repeater so we can get the
thing back up in a week or two. I can demonstrate desensitization problems
between the receiver and transmitter when RF propagates through dissimilar
metals, and will have a soldering project building a channel steering
circuit for the VHF remote base also heading up in the package.

Subject: [TARA] Free fiber optic cable

Our club has been holding giant rolls of fiber optic cable for a while, and
have had no luck selling it off. If anybody is interested or knows someone
who is in a 150 ft roll, 6-strands, weatherproof/underground fiber optic
cable, let me know. One of the ends has SMA-900 termination, other is bare
fiber.

I have 3 rolls to give away.
