I believe the -420 (a Kenwood derivative) has a menu item that you could
use to 'expand' the transmit range.  It extended the UHF band enough to
cover GMRS.

It also expanded the 2M band to cover the MARS freqs, but I'm not sure
if it opened up wide enough to cover MURS.

Of course the main issue in extending Tx range is weather the Tx/Rx
circuits are designed to still provide a clean transmit that far from
the original band's center.  I've seen some older Yaesu HTs that
maintained Tx spectral purity when the Tx range was opened up, but the
Rx side suffered a bit due to antenna design and the Rx filter
circuits,.
