I had some experience with utility monitoring years ago. Since I too wanted
to 'get up to speed' I recently I posed a similar question directly to Ary.
He was kind enough to reply and gave me some suggested websites to read.
His partial reply as follows:

Monitoring today is much easier with the advances we have in sound card
based computer software. Many programs are free, a price point I respond
well too..
