[Spooks] Help getting started in sucessfully monitoring.

Hello all. I have been interested in milcoms, pirate, clandestine and other similar communications for many years and while I occasionally run into dated listings of common frequencies I am wondering if there us an up to date site on how best to monitor for these transmissions as well as good practices and equipment suggestions? 
Some of you seem to monitor an endless selection of frequencies at any given moment. How many receivers do you operate, what types and antenna recommendations and similar info would be appreciated. I have a selection of receivers, mostly a little older but am willing to change my gear as needed and budget allows.
