Hi Jim,

Yes, if this is a training, then you are absolutely right. That's why I said
that I wonder if it's for real. Meaning "sending real messages to real
outstations/spies/whatever". In normal transmissions E17z and S06s seldom
screw up. It certainly looks like a training with all the messed up
transmissions and talks. Always fascinating to hear ;-))

Cheers
Ary

This is not so weird/unprofessional if you think of it as a training ID.
Consider that 274 only appears occasionally, and there are always screw ups,
though the regular Thursday 674 schedules mainly pass without incident.

If this is a training schedule, look at what the op(s) learned here:
1) What happens if there is an equipment failure during callup? Restart the
call up.
2) What happens if there is a power/equipment failure during the message and
the op knows where the failure was? Briefly restart the callup, then
continue with the message from the failure point.
3) What happens if the op is not sure the transmitter is functioning
properly? Send test tones.
4) What happens if there is a power/equipment failure the op does NOT know
exactly where the failure was? Go back to a point that is definitely before
the failure and continue from there.
5) What happens if all the equipment (except the transmitter) has failed?
Transmit the message live.

4) and 5) appear to have been combined in this broadcast.

It seems to me that, as a test of equipment failure procedures, this was
very professionally dealt with.

Also, look at the traffic. E17z/S06s traffic is usually very short, 5-9
groups, with little chance for "manufactured failure". Increasing message
length allows the instructor/student time to practice procedures.
If you break it down into 5 group chunks (the minimum/usual length of
E17z/S06s messages) you get:

chunk 1) 33796 13577 74526 46647 79302
chunk 2) 20534 11160 43494 (38786 30485) chunk 3) 46062 68672 (86468 38786)
30485 chunk 4) 96632 52537 53317 06675 (41847) chunk 5) 21767 (53587) 11834
81022 36903 chunk 6) 41412 (55676 09775 86315 25910) chunk 7) 05899 50387
45847 23013 (89757) chunk 8) 52343 79628 42432 (54577) 56281

I've bracketed some of the groups, which i'll come to shortly.

Chunk 1 is a message I have first noted in September '09, and E17z in June
'13.
The first 3 groups of Chunk 2 I have noted from April '10. Group 4 then was
37638, very similar to group 4 here (38786) + a totally different group in
group 5.
Chunk 3, again very similar to a message first seen in April '09, except
groups 3 and 4 have become 86468 38786, instead of 97478 39685.
The remaining chunks follow a similar pattern, with groups in brackets
either never seen or not seen in that position.

Regarding the first and last group of the chunks where previously noted.
first group
33796 - I have it noted (E17z/S06s)as appearing 41 times since 1/1/09,
40 of those instances in group 1.
20534 - 10 times, all group 1
46062 - 48 times, all group 1
96632 - 22 times, various group positions
21767 - 24 times, 22 in group 1
etc.

last group
79302 - 50 occurrences, 36 in last or penultimate group
30485 - 46, 41 as last group
36903 - 16, all last group
etc.

I could go on, but all this seems fairly convincing evidence that this is
not a major failure, but a very professional training experience.

Regards
Jim

This really is a weird station. I start to wonder if it is for real ....
Very unprofessional, unlike its Russian language sister S06s which seldom
screws up

Very nice catch, Daniel

Hello.

Today, 15 November 2014, starting at 1530 UTC on 10240 kHz there was one of
the craziest E17z transmissions as of late.

It started with the standard E17z voice machine repeating '274'. It stopped
after two minutes, and returned a minute later. After one minute of repeated
'274', the message began:

958 958 30 30
33796 13577 74526 46647 79302 20534 11160 43494

Then, suddenly, the carrier was switched off. It returned a minute later
with '274' repeated for one minute, then it continued from group #9 onwards:

38786 30485

Someone at E17z turned down the audio at the two last digits of the repeat
of the group '30485'. Blank carrier for two minutes, then faint E17z
returned with repeated '274', but seconds later it stopped.

Then over the next two minutes there were ~30 kHz wide tones, and a minute
later more '274' with low audio, which stopped after 30 seconds.
It stopped, and then 15 seconds it restarted with good audio. '274' for one
minute, and groups from #11 onwards:

..... 68672 86468 38786 30485 96632 52537 53317 06675 41847
21767 53587 11834 81022 36903 41412 55676 09775 86315 25910 (! repeated as
25901 !)
05899 50387 45847 23013 89757 52343 79628 42432 54 and off again

Then, something unusual happened - we could hear microphone noises and
breathing into it, then a LIVE YL OPERATOR began repeating '274', continuing
from group #34 onwards:

23013 89757 52343 79628 42432 54577 56281
891 891 30 30 0 0 0 0 0

Note that the DK at the end was '891', as opposed to '958' given at the
beginning. Also the message was 40 groups long in total.

The same YL was previously heard on Thursday, 13 November 2014, at
0700-0710 UTC on 8100 kHz, where she tried to send a message, also with DK
'891', but stopped after two groups.

Therefore the full message was:

274 958 30
33796 13577 74526 46647 79302 20534 11160 43494 38786 30485
46062 68672 86468 38786 30485 96632 52537 53317 06675 41847
21767 53587 11834 81022 36903 41412 55676 09775 86315 25910 (! repeated as
25901 !)
05899 50387 45847 23013 89757 52343 79628 42432 54577 56281
891 30 00000

Note that the groups '38786 30485' repeat in this message.

The message groups have been heard on S06s before. These are just examples
from this year, in order. Some repeats are even "vertical".
