Just one more word of caution Justin: this radio stuff is highly addictive. During the summer break, you may want to consider studying for your Technician class ham license. There are no code requirements and you need learn just some basic radio theory. Check out arrl.org. You could be ready to take your exam with the help of Volunteer Examiners (VE's) in your area in just of couple of weeks of studying a 1-2 hours a day. Learning about radio propagation can only enhance your experience in radio. Then, you can start talking to the world as well as listening. My only regret in becoming a ham is that I wish I had done it sooner.

Hey, I really appreciate the responses to my question.  I don't intend 
to use my radio when there is lightning, and I'm going to just keep the 
antenna unplugged from the radio when I'm not using it.  To be clear, 
I'm in southeastern PA - not a whole lot of lightning action here.

I may expand my array in the future, but for now I've just got the 20' 
antenna that came with the radio, clipped to a tree branch diagonally 
outside my office window.  Sounds like I have little to worry about.

Someone mentioned putting the free end (the end that plugs into my 
radio) in a ceramic cup when not in use, rather than letting it hang 
free from my windowsill (which is what it's doing now). Seems like an 
easy enough thing to do.

Thanks again for the kind responses.  I am completely new to this and 
just want to have some fun listening to the world.  And I'm planning to 
talk more about numbers stations with my math classes in September.  
Right now, blissfully, I am enjoying a little summer break.
