Here at my listening post in SE Kansas, every spring & summer we have to
deal with thunderstorms and lightning. I always unplug antennas when
there's a threat of a thunderstorm and so far never had any problems.
Of course I've never experience a close or direct strike, and hopefully
never will.
My 140' random wire stretches between two trees, and at the feedpoint I
have a 9:1 balun which discharges static charges directly to ground. I
also included a spark gap for near strikes or high voltage charges. Of
course this won't protect against a direct strike, but will protect
against static buildup from rain or snow. And of course the 9:1 balun
helps the impedance mismatch between the 50 Ohm coax and the high
impedance of the wire.
