Concerning equipment for the mid-fifties the Wikipedia piece is inaccurate. The IFs of the time were more likely to be in the 465/475kHz ranges with some sets using 1500/1600kHz too. Some Russian equipment employed frequencies in the 300kHz ranges.

The radio receiver that Gordon Lonsdale used was the Bush Imperial Receiver which had an IF of 475kHz.

RAFTER was also employed against possible Russian equipment operating in the midband VHF frequencies to intercept the MI5 watcher service [P Band 75 to 104MHz]. 
It was discovered that the Russian Embassy was employing its own version of RAFTER.
