I was starting to experiment with your suggestions below, but I noticed that the batteries are almost dead, so I stopped.  Let me replace them and get back to you again in a little bit.

Yes, the long antenna goes into a separate jack on the side… my radio is a Grundig G5 if you care to look up the specs.
