If you're limiting yourself to shortwave, that may be true. I got
interested in VHF/UHF/microwave/mmwave weak-signal work a number of years
ago. It's a whole new world. The others interested in this facet of ham
radio are not the same as most of the HF ops. Almost all are willing to
give a hand, get new people involved and on the air. Almost all are very
technically competent and have something useful to contribute. Sort of
breathes new life into the hobby.
