Hello Brooke and Spooks,

The technique was code named RAFTER. It was this technique that was used to capture the Russian spy Konon Molody aka Gordon Lonsdale who ran the Portland spies.

A calibrated receiver was used to intercept the product of the local oscillator and simple maths produced the received frequency. 

Lonsdale used a Bush Empire receiver. The MI5 operatives sat in the adjacent flat in a north London apartment block, the White House and copied all his messages as part of their evidential gatherings. They had already broken into his flat and bank box to recover his one time pads which were photographed and replaced.

As an aside and a bit of personal 'trumpet blowing' I was interviewed by BBC Radio 4 over this matter for a radio programme, 'Punt PI' in which the host looked at Television Detector Vans, used in the UK to track down those who don't pay their TV licenses.

In the book "Spy Catcher" Peter Wright goes into some detail about how 
MI5 used receiver LO radiation.

A key application was that the Russian embassy monitored the the numbers 
transmissions coming to London.  By listening to the embassy LO 
radiation they could figure out the signal frequency and when the 
transmission was active.  This could be correlated with another receiver 
LO radiation by using an airplane flying over London looking for the spy 
receiver LO radiation.

In another case they used it to determine that the Russians were 
listening to the radio coms of the units following people coming out of 
the embassy.  i.e. they knew who was being followed and who was not 
being followed.
