I'm rather enthusiastic about "tooling around," but it depends on one's
equipment and the signals in question. I got started listening to the
numbers by stumbling upon a flamethrower E17 broadcast after a long
night, using a Hallicrafters S-53A that I had picked up at an ersatz
flea market long before that.

I later picked up a Kenwood R5000 and have spent many happy hours with
it, but the old S-53 eventually proved indispensable in chasing around
M24. The Kenwood proved a bit of a hassle in a new RF-insane place,
and I rather drifted away from the hobby, but I found myself testing out
a Panasonic RF-2200 last month, and sure enough, there were Cubans
aplenty.

I suppose this is a long-winded way of saying that a nice analog set
strikes me as being the most engaging way to get started. The pickings
have gotten pretty slim for that game around here, but there's always a
Racal RA-17 waiting in the wings if the mania sets in.

Cheers,
Greg
