[Spooks] Letter beacon in Florida?

That sounds like it was a fish net beacon.

I've seen mention of them on the web before. They're a watertight beacon
that transmits on an antenna wire that floats along with the top of a
drift net. These are used by fishermen to track down their nets when
ocean currents move them.

Generally, they transmit in very strange and inappropriate places -
amateur bands are not at all uncommon to find 'em in.

They've been referred to as phantom or mutant fishnet beacons. I saw a
photograph of one on the web somewhere, but I have yet to find it again.

Such a device, however, very well could have washed up on shore here in
Florida and been tied up between trees. Why would someone tie it between
two trees, though? Well... I'll admit, Florida people are weird. (That
Florida tag on fark.com comes in quite handy.)

We have a peculiar art installation on Miami Beach. It's apparently a
religious sculpture or *something*. It consists of a long wire (several
miles!) supported by poles, at the edge of the sand dunes. I'm tempted
to try throwing a wire over it to make contact and using it as a VLF
antenna...
