Yeah -

   Whale is open mike with nearby receiver or speaker. Typical naval 
communications where mitter and ceiver sites are separate, and mike and speaker come 
together in a tech control facility, message center, or air station control 
tower. 
  Conventional AM feedback, the all too familiar squeal. SSB feedback, you 
get variable pitch squeal and swooshing cycling by virtue of slight freq error 
or propagation shift. Interesting to see who turns up on 4717. Sig med - strong 
this qth.  Thanks for heads up.
