Years ago, I spent the night in Middle eastern jail. The reason? I
decided to carry all my electronic gear in the cabin, rather than leave
it to the baggage monkeys. My scanner caught the eye of some very
suspicious customs types. It was an unscheduled stop in the country in
question, the commercial aircraft I was flying in developed a problem
(Airbus A330 fuel pump), which meant an overnight stay.
Eventually I was passed from one officer to another for questioning,
then fromroom to room, while all the time the braids and shoulder boards
on the officers uniforms where getting bigger and bigger and more
important looking.
I started to sweat.
It came to the point where I was sat in front of some dude who wasnt
wearing a uniform at all, just nice white flowing robes and headgear,
with gold braids, in a nice big office.I thought "Shit, now I'm sitting
in front of the president himself, this is not good..."
Two military types were trying their best to coax any kind of
incrimininting sounds out of my AR8000. I dont think they managed to
figure out the volume knob, and by habit when travelling, I had the
squelch turned off, so it wouldn't scan or search precisely to flummox
any chimp that might get its hands on it.
Anyway, after a bunch of questions, I showed them a copy of Shortwave
Magazine and an ad for the exact same radio that could be bought by
anyone in the UK. These dudes were incredulous, their jaws were agape.
"Your country allows you to buy such things??"
"Yep" I said.
Its kinda funny, they knew the radio looked exotic I suppose, and
thefore figured that it must do exotic things.
They still tried to make me sign something, I refused and was
accomodated with the rest of the airports criminal minds.
I was bailed out the next morning by an apologetic chap from the
embassy, who it seemed, had done this all too often before.
Moral of this story, keep your gear in the hold, especially when
travelling to places where folks might possibly be a little touchy.
P.S. I now believe this country plays host to both very large U.S. and
French intercept stations.
