Ben, your explanation using GRIs is much better than mine.  If 
people use your oscilloscope method and listen for the apparent 
change in audio note as the "walking" pulses approach and then 
get further away from the stationary pulses, they will hear the 
same effect that I was trying to describe for old LORAN-A.

Also I would recommend using as wide an IF bandwidth as the 
receiver permits, and use SSB or CW mode with the BFO offset as 
much as possible (retune the receiver if necessary).  This way 
the pulses are nicely defined by their "envelope" on the scope 
screen rather than being just a few cycles of some low audio 
frequency.  (Better yet to feed the IF output to the scope, but 
very receivers make that easy to do   HI.)
