Tune 3000 to 3600 KHz. You might be hearing RAYDIST positioning system. Was
heard alla time eastern US, used in Chesapeake Bay area, and others. Maybe
also CUBIC ARGO or another hyperbolic system in the 1600 - 1800 KHz range. Miss
hearing them, good sound. RAYDIST has two tones which rise and fall in
amplitude in opposition to one another, if memory serves right. Looked at it on
spectrum analyzer years ago, worked at NAVCOMMSTA Newport, RI, at the RADSTA (T)
transmitter site, Beavertail Point. Into the nineties, a pip station operated at
the old WWII Radar Station, used by Navy Reserves thru the seventies. The Navy
still ran a, I believe, DECCA HI-FIX station. Sigs were series of
close-interval pips, four in a row, in the 1600 - 1700 range. Powerful.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Paul Vincent
