Hi Sue:
In Morse code the numbers are all 5 elements long, such as zero = dash
dash dash dash dash
but they always start with some number of dashes or dots and end with 5
- the number of the other element. For example one is dot dash dash
dash dash. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morse_code
Since the last elements are always either dots or dashes you can remove
all but one of them to shorten the character. In the case of zero
removing 4 redundant dashes leaves a single dash which is the letter
"T". In the case of one removing the redundant 3 trailing dashes leaves
dot dash or the letter "A". This only works in messages that are known
before hand to contain only numbers.
Have Fun,
Brooke Clarke, N6GCE
