I scan around the "known" freqs in the evening, a few minutes after the hour
and the half-hour. I'm using a Drake R8B and have found the HF scanning
feature to be mostly useless, so I just spin around the dial. It funny, but
when you've logged a few Number Stations, I seem to have gotten an "ear" for
that certain sound that heralds a Number Stations and can catch one on the
fly, pass it up, and back up to catch the broadcast.
When I was a kid (I'm 54 now), I got my early training on an old RCA "Radio
with a Brain" that had shortwave bands and frequently heard Number Stations.
I didn't know what they were back then. Heh, I'm not sure I know any better
now.
