[Spooks] Shortwave at the movies

Hi Hugh:
Nice list of movies. How about K-19: The Widowmaker where the first Russian Nuclear sub almost has a melt down and radio operator
can not get his HF radio to work because the antenna insulator is shorted out. You would think that he could string a long wire.
Does anyone have details on the actual radio failure?
