Thanks for the clarifications and post, Clay. What you said there, these are
a single
3 letter group that means something to someone, is what I find fascinating
in the same way numbers stations are. Of course this also applies to EAM's
in the same way.
Interestingly I seem to remember similar messages such as the SKYKING 3lg
ones heard, in either a Tom Clancy book or movie... maybe Discovery channel.
It was in reference to submarine launch ICBM procedures and in particular an
authentication code was manipulated in some way. With writing elsewhere
referring to a possible strategic defense (i.e. nuke) meaning behind them, I
could imagine they are training for such an event. I would assume eventhough
we won't use them anytime soon we still train (to some degree) on these
procedures.
Or on the other hand, the old "strategic" part of SAC might have mostly died
with it, so maybe they are simply to the same assets only nowadays B2's
dropping LGBs. But of course, this is all guestimating! Actually this might
more explain the "request you echo the following" heard often on these, the
thinking being perhaps one transmitted by Andrews or Offut may need a little
help getting to the area of action.
regards,
-Todd

Okay,
I just left the USAF. I have a total of 14 years working in and for SAC
units and directly for the US Strategic Command. I have transmitted or
processed over 5000 EAM's and if my math is correct a few more of what you
refer to as skyking messages. (Yes, we keep track so the bean counters can
throw numbers on our evaluations.)
We refer to them as FOXTROT messages. FOXTROT's and EAM's are 2 completely
different messages. FOXTROT means a one way transmission. These are a single
3 letter group that means something to someone. We do not expect a reply.
EAM's are substantially longer originate from a different source and are
handled in a completely different manner.
Trust me EAMS and FOXTROTS do not have any thing in common. I would never
let a Lieutenant anywhere near either one. These messages are too
important.
That is why we have NCO's
