Freq: 8.085 MHz
d/m/y 21/02/2002
UTC: 5:10 (1st in progress)(off 5:45)
UTC: 6:00 (2nd)
Spanish female, reads lists of five number
groups, automated voice.
Receiving QTH: South Charleston, WVa.
I heard my first numbers station tonight. Heard a
lot of warbling around 21:00 UTC (somebody said
it was whalesong) at 8.085 MHz. I'm listening on
an old Zenith Transoceanic, which only does AM
and has an analog dial, so my frequency might be
a little off.
This whalesong sounded to me like it was on AM.
Where the carrier frequency should be, I heard CW
on another mode which I couldn't copy. A little
later the CW is replaced by an SSB voice.
Listening in AM I couldn't tell, but it seemed to
be in SPanish and definitely a man.
I tune back to about the same frequency at 5:10
UTC and catch an obviously automated female voice
reading 5 number groups "54188, 13154, 88489,
24421, etc." in Spanish. She continues reciting
these numbers until about 05:45 UTC.
Actually, while I am writing this message, she
comes back on reciting the numbers. No
introduction whatsoever. I don't know Spanish,
but speak German, she started out saying one word
that sounds like German "abend vier."
Anybody else hear it and can tell me what I
heard?
Thanks
Dave
