"Ionosonde" probably came from the French and is an abbreviation for
ionospheric sounder, used for studying the density and structure of
the ionosphere. I sort of grew up with them and logged many of them
on shortwave during International Geophysical Year, 1957-58. Most of
them identified back then by keying the pulse train to send a call
sign in Morse several times an hour. (Guess that kind of dates me!)
Nowadays, most HF sounders use FMCW (sweep) or chirp mode with no
explicit ID.
