In 1981, I used an Apple II to create a Donors and Alumni database. It was
an indexed database, written in Applesoft basic. It used two floppy
drives. One for the index, and one for the data.
We connected an IBM Selectric typewriter as the printer. I wrote a
mailmerge program in Applesoft Basic and printed the letters on the
Selectric. The letters looked like they were hand typed. Really. For an
$18 donation, you got a "hand typed" thank you letter. Of course, if you
donated a larger amount, you got a better adjective. For 0-18 dollars you
got "thank you for your donation". Up to 100 bucks got "generous
donation". Up to $400 you got "very generous donation". Over 400 was
handed to the "Executive Director" (Funds Raiser) for personal reply.
