the S38 has 6 tubes. the S38A (b, c, d, e) have 5 tubes, with the IF stage in oscillation for the BFO. i have an S38A with a BC453 following. get rid of the AVC with a 400 ohm or thereabouts value resister. add a polarized line cord, and always check outlet polarization correctness. i have lots of no transformer power supplies. not a good idea for dementia sufferers....... mike w7dra

The S38 has 5 tubes, the filaments added in series came out to about 110 volts so no transformer was needed. I nearly got electrocuted once with a 5 tube ac/dc radio.
