Ray,
What a gift of an idea. A SOC booth at Dayton. In one evening prior, half
us SOC's could solder up a gizmo, put it in a clean small cardboard box and
sell it for whatever anyone would pay, unguaranteed. -- If I could
trasporter myself ( as in star trek) or only drive 20 miles, I'd be first
volunteer for duty at SOC booth. Great place to unload all my xtal radio
flunkee jobs that don't or hardly work.
BUT, those things are quite the adventure. I went to one gigantic shin-dig
when they had one in Seattle eons ago. What a mix-mash of things going on.
And it was about exactally what you described. -- I was glad to get out of
there at the end of the day. My car couldn't go fast enough heading North.
"come on wheels and take me with you," all the way home. But I'd recommend
it ( Dayton) to anyone who was suicidal or didn't have a home.
How about you John, are you getting excited about it?

Hey guys,

I'm a "Gotta-Go-To-Dayton-At-Least-Once" proponent. Went once, maybe twice
in 52 years as a ham. But I still smile when I remember what I saw there.
Pedestrian-Mobile 500W-In-A-Backpack Guy, EVERYBODY wearing a handheld (who
are those guys - are they hams?), seems like a square mile of flea market
stuff, guys selling funny homebrew solutions to problems you forgot you
wanted to solve, The-Weirdest-Ham(s)-You've-Seen-In-Your-Life will be there,
some guys you've been working on the air for 50 years and haven't physically
met yet, "Big Hair" ladies with a 2M ground plane in there,
disabled-people's electric scooters with mobile rigs attached, seeing very
expensive radios that now you understand why you like your 20 (30?)-year old
rig just fine, great conversations with booth people, an opportunity to buy
5 or 6 versions of your first rig (DX-20, Globe Chief, .) ..

Hmmmm...who wants to create and man a SOC Booth at Dayton? ..now *that *
would be fun! Crooked signs, QSL's from SL1M, Awards for *not* working 100
States/Countries/Left-handed albino spider monkeys, etc. Pictures of
RF-burned lips or burnt-off moustaches, underground antenna classes..you get
the idea..

All in the spirit of "Festivus For The Rest Of us."

Long live Second Class Operators!
