As a young impoverished ham, someone actually gave me an old chrome
plated Vibroplex Original. The previous owner must not have cherished it
too highly because the chrome finish was heavily pitted with rust. Its
poor condition was probably why it was gifted to me. I used it for a
few years but trying to adjust it to send solid dits was a real chore.
So when electronic keyers became popular I embraced the latest
technological improvement and got rid of that nasty looking bug with the
chattering contacts. So did most others.
Now everyone is bug crazy and hates the sterile sound of keyers. Gosh,
maybe I should have kept that old ugly thing and tried harder to like
it. A few years ago I obtained a McElroy bug. That bug is even nastier
sounding than the old Vibroplex by a wide margin. Or maybe it just has
more character than the Vibroplex?
Bug envy? Nope. I'm sticking to my Bencher BY-1 wired into the HeathKit
HD-1410 keyer.
