W8JK was an astronomer / electromagnetics engineer.  In his early days as a professor, he attended a lecture on traveling wave tubes by a famous visitor.  Noticing that the visitor used a twisted wire to launch microwaves inside the tube, at the end of the lecture he asked if the visitor had every tried to make an antenna using the technique.  The visitor shut him down, saying he had already tried it and it didn't work, refusing to elaborate further.

That night JK made a prototype of a helical antenna in his garage and found that despite expert opinion, it did indeed work and produced a very sharp "pencil" beam.   He was the first to describe and perfect the helical antenna.

Today it's used on just about every communications and GPS satellite.
