It's funny your bring up John and his helical antennas as I was
justlooking his book, "Antennas" two days ago.
In the mid 60s, I worked for a company in the DC area and we used his
helical in a passive radar system.
I think I wore out a pair shoes walking back and forth on the antenna
range as we made adjustments.
John's book was my bible! I was going to bring it back from Texas, but
like other things, I ran out of room.
We wound them on fiberglass tubes and covered them with heat shrink to
load down the frequency.
Seems like we did make a couple for 70 MHz as well, but are project was
for K & L bands.
