We really should have the entirety of Al Gore's statement. Because he really does know what group invented the internet.
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet. I took an initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."
Weird phrasing, for sure, But Big Al said he took initiative in creating, not inventing, and further, he noted that initiatives were what he "did". Creating is not inventing.
You can create a market. That does not mean that you invented the market.
Gore sponsored the 1988 "National High-Performance Computer Act" (a national computing effort to link universities and libraries. He crafted the "High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991" and cosponsored the "Information infrastructure and Technology Act of 1992", which opened the internet to commercial traffic.
Which pretty much sounds like taking initiative. Pretty much sounds like setting the wheels in motion to guide the internet in to something that is recognizable today.
No politics here, no tightening of the sphincter, but Beware fact checking.
