[SOC] complaining

Mike,

I think you have to cut some people some slack. For many years before I
was instructed, I thought that military sets such as the ARC-5 had chirp.
I was wrong. Most do not.

Todays radio transmitters all have a T9X tone. The RST has the T portion
going up to 9 and there are modifiers for C, Chirp, K, Key clicks, and X,
for Crystal control (Xtal control) sounding. So today's radios are 339X,
579X, 599X but most don't put the X down anymore.

The ARC-5 usually doesn't have a chirp as much as it has a frequency swing
as the voltage changes.

I contacted an Eastern European, probably Ukraine, and I gave him a 479C
and I listened to his signal more closely, he didn't have a chirp, there
was no instability on the start of the transmitter, but a continuing change
in tone as the frequency generating oscillator stabilized. Master
Oscillator Power Amplifier circuits like the ARC-5 almost always had this
type of instability, that's why we had the X in the RST. If you had the X
you had gotten your transmitter working so well that it sounded just like a
crystal controlled set.

It is possible to have an ARC-5 chirp but that can be fixed:
