When I was first licensed in the 1970's as a "Class B" operator (VHF only)
my first rig was a converted ex-radiotelephone from a taxi with VALVES
(6146B in the final) which ran 10 watts of AM from a crystal. The TX only
had one channel - 145.8 - which we used to call "citizens band" (because
it was the commonest frequency in use in those days, generated from
a very plentiful 8.1MHz crystal. The RX was tunable, and, because
most people were "rock bound" at the time, after calling CQ I used to
tune "High to Low" or "Low to High" for a reply. VFO operation came
MUCH later. They were the "good old days" of amateur radio - no need
for a computing degree just to understand your rig!
