I can believe that Peter. These social networks are getting out of hand.
While I'm on both Facebook and Linked I don't participate. I get
requests from people I don't know simply because they are a friend, of a
friend, of a friend.
In recent times, in other forums which sensible people inhabit, there
are disturbing stories beginning to circulate, particularly about Facebook.
This morning was this disturbing little gem:
"...If the advertisers are using Ad Planner, they can target me based on
a whole bunch of other things too; not so specifically (Facebook is the
one that has the specific targeting, and just wait till they jump on the
AdSense-like gravy train) but they can specify the types of people they
want to target - say, females, 18 to 55, with incomes over $30k, and Ad
Planner will spit out a list of websites that serve that demographic;
then all the advertiser has to do is create a placement campaign to
those sites. And if I fall within that demographic, and it's logical
that I visit several or a bunch of those sites within a day, and they're
ALL being targeted with that ad, then I will see the same ad everywhere
I go..."
That was not written by a conspiracy theorist but by a well respected
and knowledgeable person in that industry.
The other instance related to Facebook handing over mobile phone numbers
to allow some sort of trial to take place. I couldn't verify that claim.
Facebook is beginning to become an invasive monster. Google [in my
opinion] is also progressively getting out of control with data
gathering, as well as worthless compared to a year ago.
I'm seriously considering deleting both Facebook and Linked In.
Thanks! :) 72/73's
