May I borrow this line to add to my signature? It's not "loud" enough yet.

People, hopefully, have given up on believing both politicans and government statements. And, have realized that what used to be called "news" is now carefully crafted and monitored and guided entertainment. And, given these two facts of disbelief, we must acknowledge that we ordinary folks have no way in determening any "facts" about world affairs, for example. One result is that voters no longer can vote with any real knowledge and second, that the vast mass of people then vote a prom-party king and queen based on apparent popularity and certainly beauty.
Then, I argue that it is simply impossible to label a President a Marxist or a plotter of extra-judicial murders with some certainty (the latter of which I would like to do). Please, now days, lies are standard and multiple lies/cover stories (a la JFK) come as often as possible. And I would argue that the only free people in Australia are short and brown and live way out in the bush. Only apparent freedom exists otherwise on that continent or the NA one.
Recently retired and before I have found many tasks to take up this new free time, I had plenty of time to follow the events in Thailand during what came to be called the "red shirt" event where people sat in the central street of Bangkok for about 7 weeks, seeking a change in the government. I obtained multiple sources of information, like the good historian I was trained to be, which included poor Thai, middle class Thai, direct observation, and reading for many hours on the internet. I concentrated on CNN reporting of the events as a studied test case. CNN led the way in their iReports where "ordinary people" are tapped as "news reporters" and they had one man on the scene, too (he was later run out of the country and a chubby young lady took his place). I heard, on the second day, an important item-that people were being paid to sit in and that their national i.d. cards were taken up by the organizers (no i.d. card, can not vote). On this
point, it took CNN, SEVEN WEEKS to report the "rumor" that this was happening although their vaulted iReporters (probably using their iPhones) repeatedly filed this information on the third day and afterwards.
That information was crucial to understanding the deeper nature of the "staged protest" but it did not come out. We can ask why, but for now, just take my hard-won word for it--CNN failed miserably in reporting this event. I say, if a world leader in "news" reporting makes these kinds of mistakes here, what does it do elsewhere and at all times?
I give you this too long report to support my contention that virtually no one, without spending way way more time than the average person can do, can possibly to know much about world events. And, some of us are called on to vote, sorry to say. Ha ha.
Democracy depends on well-informed voters; absent that, it is all mud flowing down hill. 73,
