They wore their welcome out in under six months. In my district? The
first arrivals were Afro-Americans doing the dirty work of setting up a
HUGE nearby base.
They were very welcome, proved to be utter gentlemen. Then arrogant,
swaggering, white Americans turned up.
My severely disabled cousin, having walked in front of an Italian
machine gun was derided as the "Gnome of Notre Dame" at the local
Saturday dance my mum held as a fund raiser for Red Cross.
Your wonderful, clean, white boorish troops, "saving Australia" ordered
the Afro-Americans out of the dance hall. Led by a 21 year old gentleman
officer. There was a near riot.
When the [again] southern white gentleman commanding officer appeared my
mother was adamant if the Afro-Americans weren't allowed in then no
dance would proceed.
By the next Saturday? They had all been transferred. Thereafter? No
white American could find a dance partner.

Yes. You might believe it, I don't. Just after WW11 after our father's
returned from the Pacific War [those who still had fathers] were
indoctrinated to never fall for the utter BS that America saved Australia.
In my father's own words:
"Were they going to fight the Japanese from Hawaii or San Diego? Never,
ever forget Churchill and Roosevelt deliberately provoked Japan into the
war"
Sorry.
But that is the bitter truth from this kids perspective.
Oh. It's no accident that during the Vietnam years American troops on
RnR in Australia had to wear civilian clothes. The Australian government
didn't want a repetition of the "deadly" riots breaking out between
Australians and your "clean, white, pure, troops".
Sorry Tom, that's all fact.
Thanks! :) 72/73's
