I suspect all humans believe they are at the centre of the Universe. It
is human nature. Perhaps that kind of thinking will change in the
future. Perhaps not.
What is more troubling is the generalization of the attitudes and
actions of the populations of each country. We are all individuals and
do not all think or act alike. Lumping everyone together leads to
prejudice <http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/prejudice> and bigotry
<http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bigot>.
As far as WWII goes, it was not a totally altruistic endeavor by
Americans. America saved everyone's arse in the process of saving their
own arse. And it was a group effort. Many people died during that era
and it is narrow minded not to realize everyone's contribution and
sacrifices.
