At great personal risk for giving an actual answer, I'll tells ya!
Ping in the networking world is a way of testing to see if another computer is on line, or if your computer is working. You use it by old school typing at a terminal window. You would type ping then the ip address you wanted to check on.
Say if you wanted to ping an ip address of 127.0.0.1 You'd just type ping 127.0.0.1.
The ping would go out as packets, and if that address was on line and accepting pings, it would answer you, and you'd see a list of the packets and the time that the trip back an forth took. Very handy tool. that.
Now what happened is that in group posts, people started using "ping" Bob Smith, or "ping" and a callsign to indicate that they wanted to see if that person was around.
And there you have.......... The rest of the story.
