Our small town in S. Texas still had a party line when I was a kid. We
actually had to wait for all the gossip to end so we could make a call.

Every day at 12:00 (high noon) the civil defense siren would be tested.

If I missed the school bus, "To bad mister, walk you lazy butt to school."

What is this calculator thingy? I still have and know how to use a slide
rule. And all the conversions were in the back of the school book or more
  likely, memorized.

If I misbehaved in school, the teacher paddled me in front of the entire
class. Then I got another one when I got home. (Note to self, do not get in
  trouble in school)

When I wanted to get my first car i had to GET A JOB to earn money to pay
  for it.

And oh yeah, I walked 30 miles each day to school in 5 feet of snow, up hill
both ways. And we ate dirt and we were glad to have the dirt to eat.
