You know many, many years ago I inquired at the QCWA booth at Dayton about their club. I and my friend's reception was such that I would never consider joining this group. Why? The host took one look at us and said you don't qualify! OK, at that time I was only 35 so he ass-u-me-d that I hadn't been a ham for 25 years, and he was right but his attitude turned me away.
I also remember when the US had all of the special frequencies set aside for the 'extras'. Maybe they still do. In my ignorance I went down to their area and sent CQ at 10 wpm or so..... A response was received: at 10 wpm.... the essence of the message was go away you are to slow, you don't belong here! And then he speeded up to a million WPM and lost me. Gosh that pissed me off. I wish that I could find my old logs and his call sign.
But I didn't give up and I didn't leave the extra portion of the band. 90% of CW ops are considerate and willing to slow down; maybe for a short qso (cuz slow CW can be boring) but at least 90% will do that and make you feel welcome.... NOW let's tell the other 10% to smarten up - cuz if they don't there won't be any new people to talk to on CW!
OH, and the guy I talked to wasn't a SOC; he was a simple butth*&^.

But the people who are better than other people have to have some
place to be better than other people. Besides their parent's basement
that is.....
But you are right. What is sad is that their smelly attitude is just
what a lot of people think of when they think of Morse code. An
awesome mode, great power/bandwidth advantage, work the world with
little power and equipment, and they try to sell the mode by claiming
that they are superior people...
