I joined the ARRL just for QST, it is about the best out there. Politics
aside, the ARRL gives good value for money.

ARRL's QSL bureau service is terrific. I wonder if the "We serve all USA
even non members" feature of the incoming bureau differs from operational
rules of other IARU organizations where EURAO states "This was the only
solution found to the problem of QSLs not delivered to its addressees but
destroyed because they are not members of the IARU Bureau in their own
countries (60% in Europe). But if USA hams don't have envelopes or credits
on file with the ARRL incoming bureau, I believe their QSLs are eventually
destroyed also. I wonder if the rate is as high as 60%?

One more praiseworthy feature of ARRL membership is the opening of their QST
archives for online access to all members. I never thought they would do
that, but to their credit, they did. It really adds to the value of a
membership.

And speaking of value, I once got upset with ARRL and investigated what it
would cost to join a different national organization in another country
rather than continue membership with ARRL.

Here was the breakdown in US dollars:

ARRL regular membership $39
ARRL international membership $62

WIA standard membership $75
WIA overseas membership $85

NZART standard membership $95
NZART overseas surface mail $95
NZART overseas air mail $110

After seeing that these other organizations charged even
higher membership rates than ARRL, ARRL membership started
looking like a real steal.

Then I realized I was already a Life member so I was stuck
with the ARRL and all their dictatorial policies.

A real SOC story. Say, does SOC offer life memberships
or do I already have an SOC life membership? If it's for life,
then I guess I'm stuck with SOC too.
