[SOC] g5rv as dummy load

I agree with Louis's ideas about lowering or raising the height of the antenna to achieve a better match....... with some reservations. These being that the antenna is at a height of at least a quarterwave above ground on the frequency of concern, otherwise below a quatertwave, there are no real advantages to be gained by adjusting height.

I have used a 256 Foot Doublet (ie 128 Foot /Leg dipole, fed with 66 foot of 450 Ohm feeder) in the European Field Day contest each September, for the last few years. I raise or lower the height of the antenna , and move the feed point horizontally, to achieve gain in specific directions / good matches.

I will leave you guys to figure out the how & why of this arrangement, but it works. European Field Day is a 24 Hour Team contest, Portable style. I usually bag a top 3 place in the restricted section, even though I am a single op & operate for 18 hours. (Sleeping SOC style for 6 hours !!!)

It is interesting that Louis Varney, G5RV / CX5RV suggested lowering and
raising the antenna to achieve good power accepting characteristics (lower
SWR).

Here is an article about the antenna. http://www.qsl.net/aa3px/g5rv.htm

Louis was very active from CX5RV for many years, I worked him there often
but I never did manage to work him when he was back in England.
