He missed out on one of the pleasures of Amateur Radio if he never called CQ. After all, you never know who might answer your CQ. You might connect with a well known Army General, a King of a Middle Eastern country, a Country and Western guitarist, or even a movie star! 

Calling CQ is unique to Amateur Radio. If you don't call CQ, you might as well be operating on CB!
