I have been thinking on this and I have come to a conclusion !
Its all about face to face.
When I was growing up in the Bronx, we had a group of kids 
about the same age, who hung around the corner and talked/argued about
sex, politics or religion witrhout a moderator. We were Jews, Roman
Catholics
and Protestants and me. (Agnostic) We got pretty heated sometimes but
nobody
got carried away because we were face to face. Now I read on this and 
other lists people hiding behind their keyboards making remarks about
people they don't know that would have earned them a punch in the mouth 
if they had been face to face. And so we wind up with a moderator/nanny
that has to step in and calm thigs down.

Us hams like the rest of humanity seem to slide backwards time to time
and 
we cant seem to make progress.
