It's true John: most of the time it does come down to just that (at least hopefully) e.g. "The bidders know what it is." Furthermore, (especially if it is 2 guys going at it) it clearly is worth it to them. I have, on occasion, placed some fairly high bids on Grid Dip Meters, so I really have no room whatsoever to talk. I'm actually glad to hear that you (John G0RDO) knew what it is-I'd hate to think it really was a kluge of some sort.
I have a few keys myself-with three keys I think a LOT of-all of which I lucked-into, rather than paid a LOT for: 1) a 1919 at-least-excellent condition Japanned-base Vibroplex Blue Racer with the case I think would go for a pretty good price; 2) a McElroy marbled-base Deluxe Model in very good condition; and 3rd, what is my personal favorite: a Dow-Key Chrome Rotatable-Yoke Bug with case in gorgeous condition. My wife can sell them when I'm a Silent-Key, but barring some financial catastrophe, they're not for sale! See 'em at: http://n4xy.com/keys_bugs-1.html .
I could never afford the price on the key that started this-and it's not my 'cup of tea' (pardon the pun, this IS SOC after all!) anyway. There are several modern paddles and a bug or two I'd like to have, but their prices are out of my range as well. Now... a GDO I don't have... hm-m-m, let's hope they take PayPal!!! http://n4xy.com/gdos.html 62-64 models from 47-48 'manufacturers' and 7-10 really worthy homebrew GDOs. I also have 4 unbuilt GDO kits: 1) an EICO 710; 2) Heathkit GD-1B and 3) HD-1250 kits; and 4) a blister-packed Italian GDO kit. And as long as I'm bragging, I also have Millen 90651 GDO SN: 1 . Same deal about all of 'em not being for sale-with that same catastrophe clause one must include these days!
