It has to do with the same reason why booze was so much more in demand
before you reach the legal age and why one sneaked in to movies when
under-aged. In SM-land (where I come from) the govt. has always been
telling us what to do and that made a lot of "opposition" amongst the
young.
Now when the code is no longer a requirement, it suddenly becomes an
interesting mode of communication as it is on a voluntary basis, not
compulsory!
As a retired r/o from the merchant fleet, I have always seen cw as the
preferred mode of communication and in contesting, I don't participate
in the "karaoke-contests".
