Hi all
As a follow up to the dog-story, I have a personal experience when I was
working for the Swedish Telecoms, who at that time was responsible for
all radio stations as well. Sweden did not at the time have any private
radio stations.
There was a 150KW AM (819Khz) station that was part of the
responsibility of the section I worked for. One day a farmer called and
asked for advice as he has just bought a hunting dog and had the dog on
a long running leash but the dog was going berserk during daytime and
could only sleep at night, after midnight that was. We went to see the
guy and it turned out he had the dog on a 100 meter long steel wire,
suspended between two trees, and a steel pulley running on the wire.
This was attached to the poor dog with a leash made of a steel chain and
a neck-chain also in steel. The whole thing was a perfect antenna and
the dog grounded it via his feet and was consequently HF-grilled in the
neck as soon as the transmitter was fired up at 6am and then the whole
day until midnight when the poor dog finally got some rest. The solution
was of course an antenna "egg-isolator" attached on the chain to the
dog and the gratefulness in that dog's eyes was more than sufficient
payment for the services.
Most of the people living around the station had "antennas" hanging
outside and hooked to fluorescent tubes in the house and that way got
free light. Some of the more driven guys also put an aluminum pot on the
cast-iron stow and connected the "antenna" and had music etc emanating
from the pot. The two different metals worked as a diode and the pot's
bottom became the speaker-membrane.
