They did.  Al cans hadn't been invented yet.  Maybe Al hadn't been 
invented yet, don't know.  You could solder them together easily ... OK, 
not so easily but they did solder together if you worked at it.  My Mom 
did not approve of us doing this, mainly because my Dad and neighbor 
Howard drank the beer for us.  My teen buddies and I built the vertical. 
  Took way more solder than the CQ article said it would.  Mom told me, 
"God won't let that antenna work."  Fundamentally, it didn't.  Thanks 
for the encouragement Mom, we really did try and it did seem like a good 
idea at the time.  Ours rested on a Miller High Life bottle.  Radials 
hadn't been invented yet ... or we didn't know about them if they had. 
Maybe that was it.
