Yes, I remember those.  You also had to tin them using blocks of sal ammoniac  (sp?).  Definitely not recommended for electronic work.  However, I did use one of those beasts to built a crystal set radio complete with a coil wound on a toilet paper tube.  I remember fashioning a piece of sheet metal to use as a wiper (no pun) to select turns on the coil.  Even fashioned the crystal holder and the tickler.
   
  I was not drinking Hamms at the time, but Brew 102 was prevalent.

Out in the shed I have a 1 1/2 # soldering iron (properly called a soldering 
copper) that used to be heated by a blow torch. That believe you me 
provides plenty of heat to heat any joint. Can be also used to solder 
pails, barrels commutators etc. Doubt that you would want to carry it to 
the top of a tower tho.
Very SOC equipment.
